Creating a semi-industrial design language – Why Not Associates

The interior design of a building, and how it works from day to day, is just as important as what’s seen by the public on the outside. When Why Not Associates, a medium-sized graphic design agency, moved into a new studio near London’s Old Street, our challenge was to use the size and scale of the space to create a practical, well lit, comfortable workplace.

We used the semi-industrial language of the building as a starting point for our design. Metal air-conditioning ducts and cable trays are clearly visible in the ceiling, and we specified, detailed and had manufactured large-scale layout tables rather than conventional desks. The project tapped into our considerable experience of environmental design, addressing issues such as acoustics, environmental control and lighting, as well as fixtures and finishes, space planning and general interior design.
