Gopak furniture for Muji
Another Muji brief was for their global network of product designers to reflect on national design cultures, to develop products which exemplified their regional cultures. Driven by Muji’s ethos of simplicity, function and pure form, we partnered with English manufacturer Gopak.
Established in 1947, the company capitalized on technological advances in hybrid aluminium and lightweight steel tubing made during wartime aerospace construction. The culmination of engineering and functional design resulted in the ubiquitous sprung-legged folding tables and benches that sell in their thousands and are found in schools, Scout huts and church halls all over the country.
We worked with the Gopak development team to hone and curate a collection specifically tailored for Muji’s furniture market. Previously seen as commercial products, new worktop materials and colours were introduced to appeal to domestic retail consumers, while sizes were altered to make them more homely in scale. Following a success launch, with the tables and seating featured in Muji publications, the products sold successfully in stores across Europe.
